DIY always seems like a fun option for skin care, house decor, or reinventing clothing. But what about makeup? Makeup is not the typical outlet for DIY’s as the final product may seem unrealistic or unusable. However, there are many DIY makeup recipes that work wonderfully and are extremely cost effective! Many people choose to make their own makeup for health reasons, being that totally organic, natural makeup that is affordable is hard to come by. Creating your own makeup can be the answer for affordable, organic makeup!

Here are 5 DIY makeup recipes:

1. Powder Foundation-

Ingredients:

  • ¼ cup flour starch (similar to corn starch, used for thickening)

  • ½ TB Unsweetened cocoa powder

  • ½ tsp ground ground cinnamon

  • 2 tsp. Bentonite clay or Kaolin clay (gentle, unharsh clay)

Instructions:

Mix all ingredients together in a non-metallic bowl (Bentonite clay will negatively react if it comes in contact with metal) starting with the flour starch as a base. Add each ingredient, adding the cocoa powder slowly, until the desired shade is reached. Whisk thoroughly, until all ingredients are flawlessly blended. Test the color on your skin until the perfect shade is reached. Store your foundation in an airtight container.

2. Eye Shadow-

Ingredients:

  • 1 TB Arrowroot Powder

  • Cocoa Powder for brown eye shadow

  • Beet powder for pink eye shadow

  • Spirulina for green eye shadow

  • Activated Charcoal for grey/ black eye shadow

  • Nutmeg for golden brown eye shadow

Instructions:

In a bowl, start with a base of the arrowroot powder. Slowly add whatever ingredient listed above to acquire the color wanted. For a more golden bronze look, add nutmeg and cocoa powder to the arrowroot powder. If a colorful look is desired, try adding spirulina for a pop of green, or beet powder for a splash of pink. If you prefer your eyeshadows to be a creamier consistency, add 1/8th teaspoon of shea butter to the powder mixture. Not only will the shea butter add hydration to the eye shadow, but it will also prevent the color from flaking and rubbing off sooner.

3. Eyeliner and Mascara-

Ingredients:

  • ¾ tsp. Beeswax

  • ½ tsp. Coconut oil

  • ½ tsp. Shea butter

  • 2 tsp. Aloe vera gel

  • 1 capsule activated charcoal

Instructions:

Add the beeswax, coconut oil, shea butter, and aloe in a glass or metal bowl that is placed in a pot of water. Slowly heat the mixture gently over a very low heat until the mixture is melted well. Crack the charcoal capsule into the mixture, and stir until thoroughly blended. If using as mascara, soak an empty mascara bottle in hot water for 10-15 minutes, and then rinse thoroughly. Then, using a funnel, empty your homemade mascara into the recycled mascara bottle. For eyeliner, place homemade eyeliner into an airtight container. To apply use your favorite angled eyeliner brush.

4. All Natural Lip Gloss-

Ingredients:

  • 1 tsp. White beeswax

  • 3 tsp. Shea butter

  • 2 tsp. Coconut Oil or Almond Oil

  • 11 tsp. Castor Oil

  • 10 drops of preferred essential oil

Instructions:

Begin by melting the white beeswax, coconut oil, and castor oil together in a glass or metal bowl that is placed in a pot of water. Boil mixture, while slowing adding in the shea butter. When all ingredients are fully melted and blended together, remove from heat. Then add in your preferred essential oil. Clean an empty lip gloss container by placing in hot water for 10-15 minutes, then rinsing thoroughly. Add your homemade lip gloss into the empty lip gloss container with a bulb syringe.

DIY Blush

5. Blush

Ingredients:

  • 2 TB Beet Powder (ground very fine)

  • 1 TB Arrowroot Powder

  • ¼ tsp. Nutmeg (ground)

  • ¼ tsp. Ginger (ground)

  • 3-5 drops Essential oil (suggested: lavender, rose)

Instructions:

Start with placing the beet powder in a bowl. Sift through the powder, making sure any large chunks are sorted out. Then whisk the powder, making sure it is ground very fine. Add in the arrowroot powder, use more for a lighter blush, and less for more pigment. To add a bit of shimmer, include the nutmeg and ginger. Mix all the dry ingredients together, making sure to get rid of any clumps. Then add in the essential oil, to give more hydration and cohesiveness when applied to the skin. This blush should be stored in an airtight container and applied with a blush brush.

I always wanted to know what exactly I was putting on my skin, and with homemade cosmetics it became a reality. Face masks made of honey and oatmeal, scrubs made of coffee and coconut oil - everything is simple and natural. And the process of preparation is a separate pleasure. In addition, they have crepe erase customer support which you can always contact if you do not understand something in the instructions.

Hi. May I ask about the shelf-life of these 5 formulations? I'm new to natural skin care and natural cosmetics but skin care has been really my passion through the years - since high school actually. Thank you so much for sharing. I loved reading your posts.
